Conference Interpretation

​
The interpretation of a conference is performed in either simultaneous or consecutive modes. In most conferences, however, the use of simultaneous translation is preferred. From a sound-proof booth and listening to the speaker through earphones, the interpreter uses a microphone to render the message in the target-language as quickly as he or she can formulate it from the source language, while the source-language speaker continuously speaks. The interpretation is rendered simultaneously to the target-language listeners via their earphones. Because of the level of concentration required, a team of two or three professionals takes thirty-minute shifts to ensure that proceedings are properly interpreted. Sight translation of documents may sometimes be required. This system was introduced during the Nuremberg trials and has since been adopted as the standard of practice.

Consecutive Interpretation

interpretation is rendered as short or long. The interpreter memorizes segments brief enough to be conveyed into the target language properly. Note-taking helps in interpreting long passages of the statement being made. These methods are agreed upon with the client before the interpretation is performed, according to the nature of the subject, its complexity, and the purpose of the interpretation.​​

Escort or Liaison Interpretation​​​​​​



During meetings, the interpreter ensures ​communication between two or among many people. This is done following a short statement, consecutively or whispering in simultaneous mode if the number of listeners does not exceed two people. Depending on the format of the meeting and the acoustics of the venue, a public address or portable interpretation system may be required.
